This hand-painted lamp base is adorned with graceful butterflies set against a backdrop in the classic shade of Imperial Yellow. The lamp stands 17.5 cm high and rests on a hand-turned Swedish birch base, stained three times and then lacquered to enhance the natural depth and luster of the wood.

The colour Imperial Yellow carries a rich and fascinating symbolism. In imperial China, this particular hue of yellow was reserved exclusively for the emperor and his court — ordinary citizens were forbidden to wear or use it. It represented power and authority, with the emperor regarded as the Son of Heaven, but also symbolized the centre of the earth in Chinese cosmology, as well as wealth, harvest, and vitality.
